About
John McCormick
John McCormick is a dedicated husband, father of four, attorney, small business owner, and proud member of the Chesapeake School Board.
John has called Chesapeake home for more than 30 years, and today he and his wife are raising their four children here. As a parent with children in Chesapeake Public Schools, John understands that the decisions made by the School Board have a direct and lasting impact on students, families, teachers, taxpayers, and the entire community.
He approaches every decision by asking a simple question: What is best for Chesapeake’s students and families?
During his service on the School Board, John has worked to provide thoughtful, principled leadership. He is willing to ask tough questions, challenge assumptions, and make difficult decisions when necessary. He has consistently advocated for safer schools, strong academic opportunities, competitive teacher compensation, meaningful parental involvement, responsible use of taxpayer dollars, and greater transparency in the decision-making process.
John has also been a strong supporter of expanding career and technical education opportunities so students are prepared for whatever path they choose after graduation, whether that is college, military service, skilled trades, healthcare, technology, or entering the workforce. He believes every student should leave Chesapeake Public Schools prepared with a meaningful path toward a successful future.
Experience That Matters
John brings significant professional, business, and civic leadership experience to the School Board. He is the founder of McCormick Law & Consulting and an attorney licensed in both Virginia and North Carolina. His legal practice focuses on business, corporate, real estate, contracts, mergers and acquisitions, and other complex legal matters.
That experience requires John to regularly analyze difficult legal and financial issues, evaluate competing risks, negotiate complex matters, and help individuals and organizations make consequential decisions. He brings that same analytical approach to his work on the School Board, particularly when reviewing policies, budgets, contracts, major capital projects, and other decisions involving taxpayer dollars.
John's commitment to Chesapeake began well before his election to the School Board. He previously served the City of Chesapeake for five years as a member of the Chesapeake Planning Commission, including serving as Secretary and Vice Chairman. That experience gave him firsthand knowledge of the challenges facing a growing city, including residential development, infrastructure, long-term planning, and the impact growth has on our schools.
John has also served as Chairman of the Board of Roc Solid Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting families fighting pediatric cancer. His professional work has been recognized by Virginia Business as part of its Legal Elite, by Coastal Virginia Magazine as a Top Lawyer, and by Inside Business as one of Hampton Roads' Top 40 Under 40.
Family, Faith & Community
For John, Chesapeake is more than the community he represents. It is home.
John and his family attend Alive Church in Western Branch, and much of his time outside of work and School Board service revolves around his wife and four children. Whether coaching his kids' soccer teams at the YMCA, attending school and community events, or caddying for his daughter on the golf course, John values the opportunities that come with being an active and involved dad.
When he has a little free time of his own, John enjoys playing golf and spending time with family and friends. These everyday connections to Chesapeake's schools, churches, youth sports, and neighborhoods are an important part of why serving the community means so much to him.
John believes qualifications and experience matter, but so does being connected to the people and community you serve. Effective leadership requires listening to parents, teachers, students, administrators, and citizens, asking the right questions, studying the facts, and having the courage to make difficult decisions.
John considers it a privilege to serve Chesapeake. He remains committed to putting students first, respecting parents, supporting teachers, protecting taxpayers, and helping ensure Chesapeake Public Schools remains a school division our community can be proud of.
